#2 of 1

Another tribute to a feminist surrealist only now getting the recognition she deserved. This autobiographical painting shows two sides of Frida Kahlo - the affluent Spanish colonialist and the strong Mexican peasant woman that she was unable to become. Kahlo suffered through her life from injuries caused by an accident in her youth. She desperately wanted children but had several miscarriages, signified by the bleeding heart, and was very hurt by her philandering husband Diego Rivera, who had a preference for the more robust earthier women unlike the sophisticated artist she was. She expressed her pain and emotions through her paintings.
