Hi All
We are thinking of using our 12'x12' spare room as a studio/room and would love some advice on what sort of lights, backgrounds, props etc
have seen light sets on ebay for under £200 with soft boxes barn doors filters etc is this too good to be any good?I am a model that likes to work from home and hubby wants to become a better photographer which is the reason for the studio idea
i would be greatfull for any advice you can give
Many thanks

Hi Debbie - best advice I can give you is to send hubby on a lighting course for a day - he'll get a great insight into lighting, backgrounds, light modifiers and where and when to use each of these things - he'll then make a more informed purchasing decision as to what will suit the sort of shots he wants to take.
There's an old phrase, buy cheap - buy twice!

Good luck though - sounds like 2012 will be a fun year in your household

At a room the size of 12 x 12 I'd suggest going down the stobist route, i.e flash guns off camera fires into brollies or softboxes.

Google Strobist to get lots of info or better still go on one of the Steve Cheshire workshops, which have to be the best value for money courses out there.

I've been working with an Interfit EX150 twin head kit for the past 5 years in a similar sized studio, with a paper backdrop setup. It's never let me down, well one blown fuse that took 30 seconds to replace!, and every shot I have ever taken in the studio has been shot with these. They are not the most durable and I would not consider moving them out of the studio, but for the money I think they are great.

I agree with MidSussexPhotography - the EX150 twin head set is ideal for a small home studio. The footprint is relatively small, the heads are small too, but they'll comfortably light a small home studio.
