I logged in this morning to the search for a model facility, the first time for over a month. It was nice to see so many new faces had joined. However I was somewhat surprised when I looked at my local area to see that a good few of them had no experience, will not travel and only accept paid work. It amazes me when some of them are asking for £30-40 p/h for basic clothed shoots. Do they ever find any work? I try and help out any of the local models who come to the studio seeking help. No-one has ever asked for payment for their first shoot though.

Not only that there are some that will tick everybox on the 'styles of work' options to attract more attention and then when you start negotiating a price they are not comfortable with half the things they have listed.

Having said that I have arranged a few succesful photoshoots and at least in one case, the model changed the 'styles' listing once they realised what it meant, and we ended up having a good shoot!

I have had 4 photo shoots now will travel and wouldn't expect payment unless I am topless etc and even then I say £20 ph and higher levels slightly more for clothed shoots at £30 ph is a joke you can get a good model nude for that

I was recently paid £15ph + travel expenses for my first artistic nude. I felt that was the right amount as I had travelled for 2 hours and was, obviously, nude. However, there's no way I would've expected more then that, as it was my first shoot of that style. I don't think it's particularly fair to ask a photographer to pay such an amount as that; particularly when they have no (or minimal) experience.
There are models out there who will work for significantly less

I think newcomers don't realise they have to work their way up the ladder.

When you pay for a model you're obviously paying for their experience as you know you'll get better shots and a shoot, should, take less time if you can get the shots you want.

A lot of new girls seem naive to this and just keen to make some money. I would imagine they don't get work, no.

What is it that makes a New model with little experience and no portfolio or even a few pictures think that she can expect £30-£40 an hour for a shoot? Do they really think it's easy money to be made? Do they realise how much studio time, equipment etc costs the photographer already and we're not getting paid? We don't mind paying where it's justified but come on girls lets help each other out here, i May not be David Bailey and your not Britain's next top model so can we work together to get something for both of us rather than the one sided deal it appears to be?

If you don't ask you don't get. There's nothing wrong with asking for payment, whether they get it or not is a different matter. I generally find that models who get paid are more likely to turn up than those who don't so if I like a new model and would like to shoot her I'd rather pay her and shoot her than not pay her and spend my time chatting to teh studio owner because the model hasn't turned up.
