Hi,

I currently rely on natural light and room lights (if I have to) and of course built in camera flash when shooting.

As the days are getting darker I was thinking of maybe investing in lighting. Can I get away with only carrying one light around with me? If so can anyone recommend a cost-effective solution?

Cheers, Paul

Hi Paul,
From similiar threads elsewhere, most are being directed towards good old e-bay. I am also currently looking at sourcing off camera lighting and having browsed said website there seem to be some very cost effective solutions available,

Hi mate, you can get away with a decent single speedlite on a stand with a selection of modifiers (soft box, umbrella etc) and a cheap trigger set (yongnuo 602's) - check out the strobist blog for some great results.

I carry 2 Bowens lights, flash heads (one variable output, double the power of the other), 2 stands, 3 leads and 2 small reflectors, semi permanently attached, into white brollies or through the brollies and a small white circular reflector surface and a large white reflecting one. All bought secondhand on ebay or inherited when I closed my studio. Seldom use all of it though.

You should be able to do quite well with one flash head, small white opaque brolly and a reflective white or cream wall. I always have a snoot, a honeycomb and a beauty reflector handy too.

In my car I carry 2 silver and 2 gold brollies but seldom use them and a big bag of different coloured cloths, but find white or black ones most used(oh and big crocodile clamps to fix them wherever I can). Plus bags and cases of clothing, masks and other miscellaneous props.

Home studio has one flash head high up on a long telescopic arm mounted on wheels, for hair and backlighting, and the portable set is brought into play.

BUT 2 days ago I shot in smallest kitchen/diner imaginable with 2 tables and 4 chairs and 2 computers, with the boyfriend working at one of them, more like a broom cupboard, so opted for on camera flash.

Hope that helps.
