Instead of a lee big stopper, could i get away with an nd8 filter for my 5d mark ii for coastal shots?

Sure, you should be able to!

I´ve found some photos on flickr, where people have used an ND8 for coastal shots.

Of course, time of day, clouds etc etc will all effect how your shot turns out, but the ND8 should allow you to get a slow enough shutter speed to get a good misty shot.

Oh and don´t forget to post your results here Tony, I´d be interested to see them.
